The Borneo Case | GUIDE: Setting Up For A Film Screening

GLOBAL BERSIH CITY COORDINATORS: WE NEED YOU!

Global Bersih is excited to announce a worldwide documentary screening of The Borneo Case with participating global cities to bring fellow Malaysians together on this day. The cities who have so far pledged to participate are Busan, Perth, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Auckland, Geneva, Paris, Cologne, Munich, Stuttgart, Delft, London, Glasgow, Los Angeles, Washington, Minneapolis and San Francisco.

WHY SEPTEMBER 16?

Malaysia Day is held on 16 September every year to commemorate the establishment of the Malaysian federation on the same date in 1963. It marked the historic union of Malaya, North Borneo, Singapore and Sarawak as the Malaysia that we know today. While The Borneo Case documentary exposes money laundering and environmental crisis in Sarawak, it is actually a manifestation of the broader nationwide crisis of power abuse, corruption and impunity.

NOT A CITY COORDINATOR?
If you have not organised any Malaysian event in your city, don’t worry as Global Bersih will be happy to assist you, and give you some advice on how to do it.

Here is a step-by- step guide on how to plan a Malaysia Day 2017 event, including a film screening of The Borneo Case!

1. BUILD YOUR TRIBE
Get in touch with your fellow Malaysians and others in your city, who are interested to advocate for a more just, peaceful and democratic Malaysia. Also use the screening occasion to meet up with Malaysians residing in your city/town.

2. BOOK A VENUE & SET THE TIME
Depending on the number of people who may be interested to come along to event and film screening, you can book a suitable venue for this event. It could be a community hall, a conference room, library, even your home!

Erik Pauser and D.Williiams, the producers have offered the film for free and in any format that you need to facilitate screening. So figure out your screening needs and we will provide it.

Global Bersih encourages all City Coordinators to host your event on September 16, to coincide with Malaysia Day celebrations in Malaysia and around the world. If you are using a community hall, ensure the venue has a projector that can screen the film on the big screen.

3. ORGANISE MALAYSIAN FOOD
No Malaysian event will be complete without our yummy Malaysian snacks! You can make it or order some food from your closest Malaysian restaurant/cafe.

4. PREPARE YOUR COMMUNICATIONS MATERIALS
Global Bersih can assist you in creating a poster, and host the event on our Facebook page. You will be able to share the link, and the poster to your networks to get the word out.

5. OPTIONAL:
INVITE A MALAYSIAN ACTIVIST/POLITICIAN/ACADEMIC FOR YOUR PANEL DISCUSSION
To hear more from Malaysians back home, Global Berish has compiled a list of potential Malaysian speakers who will be happy to speak to your community via Skype or Google Hang Out.

We encourage the event to be a free event for everyone but you can collect some donations to recoup some of the costs.

With the heat of the 1MDB scandal global hunt getting closer to home and the 14th General Election taking place, anytime soon, this year’s celebration is not only about remembering the past, but ensuring that real change is possible in the country.
