Global Bersih denies baseless allegation it was created by political parties to advocate an Arab Spring-like uprising

Global Bersih categorically denies the baseless allegation that Malaysian political parties formerly in the Opposition (prior to the 14th General Election) “had established NGOS such as Bersih Global (sic) to advocate an Arab Spring-like uprising in Malaysia”. (1)

As reported by Malaysiakini on 19th July 2018 (2) and Free Malaysia Today on 20 July 2018 (1), these allegations were detailed in a letter dated 4th May 2018 from Hasanah Abdul Hamid, then Director-General of the Research Department in the Prime Minister’s Department, on behalf of the Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation (MEIO) to Gina Haspel, then Director-designate of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States of America.

At the time, the Barisan Nasional coalition was in power and Najib Razak was Prime Minister of Malaysia. The MEIO is allegedly an intelligence unit which reported only to Najib (3). The above-mentioned letter has been described as “treacherous and treasonous” by Patriot, an association of Malaysian military veterans (4).

Global Bersih has been existence since 2011, after a spontaneous outpouring of worldwide support for the Bersih 2.0 rally for free and fair elections (5) and is a registered NGO in Geneva and bound by Swiss law. Global Bersih is respected in the international human rights community as a non-partisan international movement of overseas Malaysians and friends of Malaysia, with its aim of supporting civil society and strengthening Malaysia’s maturing democracy. Global Bersih does this through peaceful and legal means.

We advocate the respect of human rights and democratic reforms, including the possibility for all Malaysians at home and abroad to vote via transparent and permanent processes (6). For further information, please contact Global Bersih at:
